Professor Frank Wilczek, Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics in the Center for Theoretical Physics and a Research in the Laboratory for Nuclear Science was appointed founding director of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Shanghai, China on September 14, 2017.
The TD Lee Institute was set up with the direct involvement of Xi Jinping, President of China. Professor Wilczek is also Chief Scientist at the Wilczek Quantum Center (WQC), a theory group at SJTU.
TDLI will be the first institution built at a new Science City, located centrally in the Pudong area between downtown and Pudong airport. The total area of Science City is 94 square kilometers, and it will eventually contain 8 research facilities. TDLI aims to be a world-leading center and will have both theoretical activities and experimental research. TDLI will be involved in public outreach including public lectures and summer schools.
At the inauguration event, Zhongqin LIN, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) discussed the future opportunities and the national level goals of SJTU. “This is one of the most exciting developments in China.” he said.
